Albany

Located on the Mohawk and Hudson rivers about 140 miles north of New York City, the city of Albany is the state capital of New York. While the city has 93,963 residents, the city’s Metropolitan area has a population of 850,957 residents, making it the fourth largest urban area in the state of New York. The city was originally established of the Dutch Fort Orange, which was erected in 1624 and established by the  Dutch West India Company as a fur trading post. The city was eventually acquired by the English and renamed Albany after James II, the Duke of Albany. The city was officially chartered in 1686, making it the second oldest city in the state of New York, after New Amsterdam.

Because Albany is the home of the state government, the government serves as the city’s major employer and economic focus. Because, however, the University of Albany is located there and has a strong engineering program, the city is becoming more and more well known for its high tech industry, particularly the invention of nanotechnology.
