Aurora

The city of Aurora is the third most populous city in the state of Colorado. With a majestic skyline set against the rugged beauty of the Colorado landscape, it would be hard to believe that the 60th most populous city in the United States began so modestly. The history of Aurora begins with the real estate tycoon Donald Fletcher, who established the town of Fletcher in 1891 on the eastern plains near Denver. After Fletcher abandoned the town in 1907, the residents renamed it “Aurora,” meaning, “dawn” in Latin. The town remained sparsely populated until the end of World War II, when suburban expansion out of Denver led to a revitalization of the city, putting it on track to be the burgeoning community that it is today.

Today, the city of Aurora’s population is nearly half of nearby Denver’s population, establishing it not just as a Denver suburb, but rather as a sister city. In site of the fact that it lacks an urban, downtown, metropolitan district, the city’s population alone identifies it as city-like. But whereas most cities’ specialization involves some type of industry or commerce, Aurora’s main export is its population of commuting workers who work in Denver.

Aurora’s neighborhoods include Chadsford, Chambers Heights, Crestridge, Cross Creek, The Dam East, and Del Mar among others. Surrounding towns and cities include: Broomfield, Sheridan, Littleton, Englewood, Denver, Watkins, Westminster, Northglenn, Thornton, Brighton, Lafayette, Louisville, and Superior.
