The city of Port St. Lucie is located on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Florida Panhandle, and it has a population of 144,159 residents. The city is a relatively new one, having begun only in 1961 as a result of a massive housing development started by the General Development Corporation. The 1980s saw rapid population and economic growth in the city. Much of the population boom was the result of retirees from the northeast seeking to retire and relocate to Florida.
