Seattle, Washington, the “Emerald City,” is a modern, sophisticated American city located in the far northwestern corner of the United States. Located between an arm of the Pacific Ocean known as Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle is just 96 miles south of Canada, and its cool, misty, damp climate, responsible for its nickname as the “rainy city,” makes for the city’s unusually clean air quality and environmental conditions.

The city of Seattle is home to many large, multi-national corporations, such as Boeing, and features a very cosmopolitan downtown and commercial district. It is a city known for its relaxed, hip culture, and boasts a healthy collection of nightclubs, bars, restaurants and, in particular, coffee shops. After all, Starbucks, the corporate coffee-serving giant, began in Seattle. It is also well known for a short-lived yet frenetic music subculture, known as grunge, which became popular throughout the U.S. in the early to mid 1990s. Made famous by the rock band Nirvana, the grunge sound was an amalgamation of punk, rock, and heavy metal. Several Seattle-based bands followed in Nirvana’s success, including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Mudhoney among others.

Seattle has several specific neighborhoods. Some of them include: Adams, Loyal Heights, Sunset Hill, West Woodland, and Whittier Heights. Some of the surrounding cities around Seattle include: Bellevue, Newport Hills, Burlen, Des Moines, Kent, Bremerton, Parkwood, Edmonds, Redmond, Mill Creek, and Thrashers Corner.
