The nickname of the beautiful and historical city of St. Louis, Missouri is “The Gateway of the West,” a nickname that might sound familiar. The city of St. Louis was founded by French explorers and is named after King Louis IX of France. Like many other Midwestern cities, St. Louis also shares German heritage as well. The city saw its major growth when it became famous as a manufacturing city, making use of its location on the Missouri River to distribute its manufactured goods all over the country. In recent years, the city has shifted to a more globalized economic identity and is now a leader in the development of medicine, biotechnology, and other crucial sciences. St. Louis is also well known for its cultural heritage. It is home to many world-renowned museums and cultural attractions, and has also contributed greatly to Americana culture through its local cuisine and music.
