St. Paul
The city of St. Paul, Minnesota, now the 61st largest city in the United States by population, serves as the state’s capital and comprises one half of the famous “Twin Cities” along with Minneapolis. Like Minneapolis, St. Paul is a formidable metropolis, however it didn’t start that way. Unlike most U.S. cities, which began as settlements, villages, hamlets, or forts, the city of St. Paul was actually started by a tavern. The “Pig’s Eye Tavern” was run by a man named Pierre Parrant who sold liquor to the Native Americans, fur traders, explorers, and American soldiers who lived nearby. The local area around the tavern soon grew into an outpost town as a result of its close proximity to the Mississippi River. When the River became an optimum travel route for trade, the outpost grew to become St. Paul and was named the capital of Minnesota in 1858.
Like many other Midwestern cities, St. Paul is home to a major insurance company, Travellers Insurance. The city also plays host to several major manufacturing corporations as well, such as St. Jude Medical, a company that manufactures medical devices, and Ecolab, a chemical and cleaning product company as well. Some famous Americans also hail from the city of St. Paul, such as renowned author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and cartoonist and creator of “Peanuts,” Charles M. Schulz. The city also contains several celebrated museums, such as The Minnesota Museum of American Art, The Goldstein Museum of Design at the University of Minnesota, and The Minnesota History Center.
