Tempe

Located in the heart of the massively populated Phoenix Metropolitan Area, the city of Tempe, Arizona is home to 169,712 residents. Named after the famed Vale of Tempe in Greece, Tempe borders other large suburban offshoots of Phoenix, such as Scottsdale, Chandler, and Mesa.

Much of the city of Tempe’s population growth over the course of the 20th century is due in large part to the growth and expansion of nearby Phoenix into one of the largest cities in the United States. Tempe, however, is more than just a “boomburb” – the city is home to two nationally recognized institutions, the headquarters of U.S. Airways and the main campus of Arizona State University, host of the famed Fiesta Bowl.

The city of Tempe is steeped in history that dates back before European settlers. The Hohokam Indian tribe, one of the most ancient tribes of the American southwest, inhabited the region as early as the 1400s. The first Europeans were American soldiers who established Fort McDowell near the Salt River in 1865. The presence and security of the U.S. military allowed the area to become further populated by settlers. Since that time, the city of Tempe has continued to grow in size and population, making it a major community in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

Some of the surrounding towns and cities include: Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Glendale, Sun City, Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley Sun Lakes, Gilbert, and Bapchule.
