The city of Vancouver, Washington is located on the Columbia River and is part of the Vancouver-Portland Metropolitan area. The city is often confused with its Canadian counterpart, Vancouver, British Columbia. In fact, the city of Vancouver, Washington was incorporated as a cit some thirty years before the Canadian city. Both cities are named after famous and honoured Canadian sea captain, George Vancouver. The city boasts a population of 160,800 residents.

The city of Vancouver, Washington originally relied heavily on the salmon fishing industry as well as the fur trade and lumber. The wet, cool climate also provided for optimal growing conditions for crops such as apples, strawberries, and prunes. During the first part of the 20th century, the city began to industrialize, with the building of the Standifer Shipyard the Kairser shipyard, and the Boise Cascade Paper Mill.

Today, the city of Vancouver, Washington has become a leader in the high-tech sector. With major employers in the city such as Hewlett-Packard, WaferTech, and SEH America, the city’s economic focus continues to move away from manufacturing and agriculture.

Vancouver is also renowned for playing host to one of country music’s most famous figures. Willie Nelson moved to the city in 1956 and began his illustrious music career here.
