Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. is both a city and a district, controlled by the United States Congress as opposed to a city government. It was founded in the late 1700s in fulfillment of Article One of the Constitution that mandated that there be a federal district. As a result, Washington D.C. is home to all three major branches of the United States Government, as well as the World Bank, the International Monetary fund, and other essential international organizations. To be sure, its stoic national monuments and government buildings, such as the White House, the United States Capitol, The Lincoln Monument, The Washington Monument, and The Jefferson Memorial among many others, are known throughout the world as symbols of freedom.
Because of the emphasis of the Federal government, the city of Washington D.C. has a decidedly different identity than that of most cities in the United States. Most of the professional inhabitants of the city are elected officials or else somehow related to the function of the Federal Government. Still, the city boasts many of the same diversions as other large cities. It is home to several professional sports franchises, the Washington Redskins football team, the Washington Wizards basketball team, the Washington Capitals ice hockey club, and the newest addition to the sports culture in D.C., the Washington Nationals baseball team. Passionate and loyal fans support all of the teams in D.C.
The city itself has several different sections and neighborhoods, classified as wards. Some of the neighborhoods in these wards include: Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Le Droit Park, Georgetown,
Sheridanl, Kalorama, Logan Circle, Mount Vernon Square, Berkley, Cathedral Heights, Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park, Crestwood, Fort Totten, and the Penn Quarter. Some surrounding towns and cities include: Arlington, Coral Hills, Walker Mill, College Park, McLean, Alexandria, Hyattsville, Bethesda, Seven Corners, Mount Vernon, Suitland, Lanham, Greenbelt, and Wheaton.
