Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem is the fourth largest city in the state of North Carolina, with a population of 185,776 residents. The city comprises one of the three cities in the famed Piedmont Triad, along with Greensboro and High Point, North Carolina. Known affectionate as the “Twin City” for its dual-city name and the “Camel City” after its long-standing relationship with the Camel brand of cigarettes, the city of Winston-Salem remains a prominent cultural and economic center in the middle heartland of the state of North Carolina.

Early on, Winston-Salem was known as a tobacco center for the country. While the agrarian communities around the Piedmont Triad grew tobacco crops, the city itself was home to several major cigarette and tobacco companies, such as R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Other famous companies got their start in this city as well, such as Wachovia Bank, Krispy Kreme, and Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce. The city is still known for its textile and furniture manufacturing as well, but it is also beginning to attract nanotech, high-tech, and bio-tech-oriented companies.

Much like Greensboro, Winston-Salem is well known for its highly respected academic institutions. Universities such as Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, and North Carolina School of the Arts attract talented students from all over the world.

Surrounding cities and towns include: High Point, Greensboro, Trinity, Thomasville, Lexington, Clemmons, Lewisville, Kernersville, King, Union Cross, Colfax, and Rudd.
