Bagpipes

The bagpipes are a musical instrument that is similar to other aerophones such as the harmonica, harmonium, reed organ, and accordion in that it makes musical notes by passing air over enclosed reeds. As opposed to these other instruments, however, the bagpipes apply air to its reeds and pipes by way of an air-tight bag that the bagpipe player keeps inflated with his or her own breath. The land of Scotland is chiefly known as the source of bagpipes and bagpipes music. Irish folk music also features a similar kind of bagpipes, known as uileann pipes, which uses a bellows as opposed to a bag that is inflated by the player’s breath. In addition, there are forms of bagpipes found all throughout Europe.

Bagpipes are typically comprised of three major components, the bag, the chanter, and drones. Bagpipe players must learn to keep the air bag filled with air during a performance. The chanter is the melody pipe of the instrument and is played similarly to a flute or recorder. However, because the chanter can never be stopped, players must use grace notes and accents to differentiate between note changes, which can be a difficult technique to learn. In addition, bagpipes are also equipped with drone pipes, which continuously play droning notes that accompany the melody.
