About Creole
The term “creole” refers to a form of a major language, similar to a dialect or a pidgin. Usually creoles are formed in communities that are linguistically and culturally isolated from the source country of the language they speak, and as a result, the language begins to evolve and change over time, taking on new accents, pronunciations, and vocabulary that are not used in the original language. In America, the most intriguing creole is that of Louisiana Creole. This creole is descended from French and is a combination of French, Native American, Spanish, and West African linguistics. French was originally brought to the Louisiana region by Acadian pioneers migrating down from Quebec. Later on, when Louisiana was an official colony of France, it was a major port for the New World. Because slaves from West Africa and Native Americans all converged in Louisiana, a very idiomatic and interesting French-based Creole developed over the years. Today, the language is only spoken by a small number of people – less that 400,000 worldwide. Therefore, it is a very specialized language, and many people who wish to learn it seek to preserve the language so that it won’t become lost in practice.
When studying Louisiana Creole, it is a good idea to have a base in the regular French language, since it forms the basis of the language. In many cases, the difference between Creole and French is in the pronunciation, therefore learning the accent and phonology of the language is essential. In addition, students also must learn the specific vocabulary, grammar, syntax, conjugation, and expressions that are particular to Louisiana Creole. Because there are very few people who speak this language, a one-on-one Creole tutor is essential to successfully learning the language.
