About Greek

The Greek language is an Indo-European language spoken mainly in Greece and Cypress, but is also found in Greek communities throughout Europe and America. Although there are distinct differences between the Greek spoken today and Ancient Greek, Modern Greek is directly descended from the ancient form of the language, making Greek one of the oldest languages still spoken today in the world. The language has been written in the Greek alphabet since the 9th century BC, and the language itself dates as far back as three thousand years. Although the language does not represent one of the most important international languages in today’s culture, it is still widely studied in Europe and America, particularly by scholars and those of Greek origin who wish to know and understand the language of their ancestors.

The Greek alphabet is completely different from the Latin alphabet that English uses, and as result, learning to read and write in the Greek system is an extra step in learning the language that does not exist when learning other European languages such as Spanish, French, or German. In addition, students of Greek, regardless of their grade level, must also learn Greek vocabulary, grammar, syntax, pronunciation, word order, and expressions. While some universities and colleges offer Greek language courses, students can also greatly benefit from taking personal, one-on-one lessons with a certified Greek language tutor.
