About Turkish
Turkish is a widely spoken language in Eastern Europe and Middle East. It is spoken by more than 50 million people worldwide, with the largest concentration of speakers in native Turkey and Cypress. There are also Turkish-speaking communities in Bulgaria, Greece, and Kosovo as well. The language is quite old, dating back nearly 1,200 years to central Asia, where it is believed that Turkish originated. The language expanded immensely as a result of the conquests of the Ottoman Empire, and to this day the modern form of the language is directly descended from the language of the Ottoman Turks.
While there once existed an Ottoman Turkish alphabet that was used in writing the language, a Latin-based alphabet system was adapted in 1928 by Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in order to bring Turkey closer to the western world. This shift from an eastern alphabet to a western one greatly facilities the ease of a westerner learning the language. In addition, students of Turkish must also learn Turkish vocabulary, grammar, syntax, word order, conjugation, pronunciation, and expressions.
