About Sculpting
The art of sculpture represents one of the most refined and revered of the visual and plastic arts. Great artists like Michelangelo and Da Vinci created master works of sculpture that depict the human in its most graceful form. While painting and drawing merely create an effect of dimension, a sculptor must work in a three-dimensional perspective, which means that every angle of the sculpture must be perfect. Throughout the history of human civilization, sculpture has continued to progress, and today it takes into account a variety of different styles and approaches. While some sculptures are carved and chiseled out of huge blocks of marble and other stone, other sculptures are assembled, built up out of clay, welded, molded, or cast. Some modern-day sculptors even create works of art by using only edible materials such as cake, sugar, and ice cream.
In order to become a sculpture, a great deal of training and knowledge must first be mastered. Most professional sculptors’ artistic abilities go beyond the scope of sculpting, and typically they have a strong background in drawing and painting as well. For those who wish to sculpt human figures, having an understanding of anatomy is also quite helpful. Some of the styles of sculpting include stone carving, bronze sculpture, woodcarving, casting, welding, marble sculpture, and assemblage. A sculpting tutor can be a tremendous asset to a prospective sculptor, since they can teach these various styles and techniques in a one-on-one setting.
