About Accordion
The accordion is one of the most widely used instruments in world folk music. It is part of the free reed aerophone family of musical instruments, which includes other popular instruments such as harmonicas, reed organs, harmoniums, and concertinas. A free reed instrument is any musical instrument that creates sound by passing air over a fixed reed, making it vibrate and thus sound a musical note. The accordion is one of the most versatile and expressive free reed instruments, and it is used in the folk music throughout Europe, Russia, South America, and the United States as well. Music styles such as Polka, Cajun music, Zydeco, Irish Folk Music, Russian Folk Music, English Folk Music, Italian Folk Music, and French Folk Music among many others feature the accordion.
In each culture that features the accordion in its folk music, there are different tunings and constructions that pertain to the style of music itself. Some accordions feature a piano-like keyboard for playing melodies, while some feature small circular buttons. Tunings, keys, tone, size, and shape are all quite different from folk music to folk music as well. What all accordions have in common, however, is their overall design, which features two airtight wooden boxes joined together by a bellows. An accordionist holds one box in each hand and contracts and expands the bellows, forcing air over a series of reeds so that each key can create one note when contracted and a different, corresponding note when expanded. The melody is played on the right hand, while the left hand operates small buttons that provide chordal or bass accompaniment to the melody. As a result, the accordion can play loud, robust folk tunes on its own, without the need for accompaniment from another instrument.
While some musicians have had success in teaching themselves accordion, it is best to work one-on-one with an Accordion tutor who can instruct you in the basics of the instrument and continue to move along in your development on the instrument.
