About Banjo
The banjo is one of the central instruments that personify American folk music. The banjo was first designed by African slaves in America, which were made from gourds and animal skins. The early banjo developed into the 5-string model that is currently used today in country, old time, and bluegrass music. The body of a banjo closely resembles a drum and even features a tightly tuned snare drum head as its soundboard. A high-pitched fifth string mounted on the side of the banjo’s neck acts as a drone string and allows the player to create the intricate, fast-paced banjo picking parts that the instrument is known for. Typically, banjo players play with a set of fingerpicks or their bare fingers.
Another major aspect of banjo playing involves tuning. There are multitudes of different banjo tunings that allow players to play certain songs. As a result, it is important for banjo players to learn these tunings, as well as the logic behind how these tunings work. There are also several playing techniques that create very specific effects on the banjo, such as clawhammer, frailing, Scruggs-style picking, strumming, and drop thumb. As a result, the best way to learn these tunings and techniques is to work one-on-one with a banjo tutor.
