About Bassoon

 

The Bassoon is one of the most innovative and difficult instruments to play in an orchestral setting. It is part of the woodwind family or double reed instruments. The use of a double reed and complex fingering make it a challenge to learn and play, so much so that bassoon is usually an instrument that musicians learn after learning or mastering other woodwind and single reed instruments, such as clarinet, saxophone, or flute. The tone and musical characteristics of the oboe, however, are highly prized, and it is able to great a variety of textures, from deep, resonant bass sounds to higher-pitched soloing sounds. While it is typically not used in jazz or other pop forms of music, it is a regular addition to a symphonic orchestra.

There are two major systems to playing the Bassoon, the German “Heckel” system, and the French “Buffet” system. Because of the difficulty in playing the Bassoon, it is highly recommended that Bassoon students work one-on-one with a Bassoon tutor.
