About Salsa Dance
While Salsa music and dance is often associated with Latin music and dance in general, Salsa truly has a culture and tradition of its own. The dance form developed in Cuba and Puerto Rico as the dancing form that accompanies the music. Unlike other South American music styles, Salsa is very much related to African music styles, due to the larger percentage of African-descended people who inhabit Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Salsa dance tradition is no exception to this rule and reflects the islands’ African roots as well. It is a partner dance that lives up to its name, referring to the spicy Lain sauce found in many Latino cultures.
There are several specific dance steps and techniques to Salsa that are not found anywhere else in Latin music. Steps such as the Break Step, Forward Break, Back Break, Side Break, the Basic Step, Spot Turns, Extensions, Copa, and Cross Body Lead. Among Salsa styles, there are several regions that have specific moves, such as the Los Angeles style, the Cuban style, the New York style, Colombian style, and the Puerto Rican style among others.
