About Flamenco
The term “flamenco” refers to the traditional folk music of Spain. While flamenco has become the defining folk music of the entire country, it first developed in the Spanish region of Andalusia. There are three particular areas of flamenco that students often seek to learn: flamenco singing, dancing, and guitar playing. The singing aspect of flamenco is actually quite influenced by Arabic music, due to the fact that Spain was occupied by Arab cultures for hundred of years. As a result, flamenco singers use portamento and semitones that are very eastern-sounding. A flamenco singer sings is different tones and styles, depending on the type of songs. Whereas some flamenco songs are fast and aggressive, others are slow and ballad-like.
Flamenco guitar playing is performed on a classical-style guitar and is typically made of spruce. The flamenco guitarist uses a combination of complex fingerpicking and strumming known as golpes to achieve a combination of melody, accompaniment, and highly aggressive, rhythmic playing to go along with the traditional singing and dancing. The flamenco guitar also outlines the chords that define flamenco music, which are also highly influenced by Arabic and Middle Eastern styles.
Finally, flamenco dancing is known for its sweeping hand gestures and aggressive foot stamping and tapping, which plays the rhythmic, percussive role in the music. Also, sometimes flamenco dancers will also perform with a kind of small wooden set of cymbals in each hand, called castanettes.
Regardless of your particular interest in learning flamenco music, working one-on-one with a flamenco tutor can greatly improve your skills.
