About Mandolin
The mandolin is part of the lute family of instruments, and it can be either plucked or strummed. The instrument is similar in size and design to a violin, however the neck and bridge are much flatter is order to allow for strumming and playing of chords with either a plectrum or fingers. Also, instead of the four strings on a violin, most mandolins feature eight strings, which comprise the four strings of a violin, but doubles in courses. As a result, the mandolin has a chorus effect and is quite loud and bright in its tone. It is used in a wide variety of folk music styles and is particularly featured in American folk and bluegrass music, Italian folk music, and Irish folk music. In all three of these music styles, the mandolin is often used to play melodies, with the players trilling on each note.
There are also many styles and variants of the mandolin. In American folk music, two mandolin body types are used, the A-style mandolin, which features a teardrop-shaped body, and the F-style mandolin, which features a highly sculpted, decorative body that almost looks like a cursive letter F. Both instruments are quite similar in sound, however the F-style mandolins are usually considered to be of higher quality. In addition, recent innovations have led to acoustic-electric mandolins and even fully electric instruments that can be used in rock bands.
Whatever your interest in the mandolin, the best way to learn the instrument is to work one-on-one with a mandolin tutor.
