About Mastering
The process of mastering is the final stage of professional music recording. It is also considered to be the most difficult to understand process, since mastering is performed on a recording once it has already been fully mixed and released from the recording studio. The mastering process, however, is quite necessary, especially for professional recordings that are intended to be released commercially on the radio and in CD format. A mastering engineer has several tasks he or she must accomplish during the mastering process. First, if there are multiple songs or tracks that are being collected or grouped together, such as on a CD, the mastering engineer must make sure that all of the recorded songs’ volume levels are equal. Secondly, mastering can slightly re-mix certain songs in the event that a particular voice or instrument seems too loud or quiet. Finally, mastering can take the entire dynamic range of a song and compress it, which ultimately allows the mastering engineer to render the recording a loud volume. As a result, even when certain sections of a recorded song appear to be played quietly, the recording itself remains just as loud as in other section of the song that are played loudly.
Just like a recording engineer, a mastering engineer’s role in the professional recording process is as much as art as it is a craft. There are many specific techniques that must be learned. As a result, those who wish to learn mastering should work one-on-one with a professional mastering tutor.
