About Pedal Steel Guitar

 

The pedal steel guitar is one of the most recognizable music textures heard in American country music. It is derived from slide guitar playing, which was first developed by Hawaiians in the 19th century. The pedal steel is one of the most unconventional guitar types in the world, since it has no acoustic chambers or attached necks. Instead, two guitar necks with a minimum of ten strings each are built into a tabletop. The strings are amplified by way of sensitive electric guitar pickups, and the strings are played with steel fingerpicks and a metal slide. The strings are usually tuned to C6 tuning and an E9 tuning. What gives the Pedal Steel its distinct sound, however, are a series of knee levers and pedals that bend the strings up and down in pitch, thus creating a twangy portamento sound that is immediately identifiable as country music. Also, sometimes Pedal Steel guitars feature a volume pedal, which allows the player to swell into the notes he or she is playing, creating a bowed-like sound.
