About Sequencing
Sequencers are one of the most popular tools used for creating electronic music today. They are most prominently used in creating electronic drum beats. Sequencers organize musical scores and parts that are composed and created on digital music devices, such as keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, and MIDI controllers. A sequencer allows a musician to perform several different music parts and then use the sequencer to order and arrange them into a song-like format. The same can be done for electronic drum parts. A specific type of sequencer called a “step sequencer” simplifies the beat-making process, diving the beats of a measure into 16 separate buttons, each of which can be selected for a variety of different drum sounds. In this way, complex, intricate drum beats can be created in an almost piano roll-like format.
Because sequencers consistently remain on the cutting-edge of music technology, it isn’t always easy to find courses in music schools that teach how exactly to use them. As a result, working one-on-one with a sequencer tutor can be a tremendous advantage.
