About Sitar

The sitar is a stringed, guitar-like instrument that is used predominantly in Indian Classical music. It is predominantly used as a solo instrument, due to its loud, piercing tone. Unlike western instruments, the sitar features many sympathetic strings in addition to its melody strings. These sympathetic strings are not meant to be played directly, but rather are tunes to a series of musical notes that are designed to vibrate when the player plays certain notes. In this way, the sitar has an almost magical, mystical quality to it, since it is constantly emitting overtones and undertones based on what the sitarist is playing. The specific buzzing sound of the strings is created by a special bridge that the strings are pulled over, as well as the unusual gourds that project the instrument’s sound, known as “toumbas.” The strings are played using a kind of metal-wire plectrum that wraps around the index finger, known as a “mizrab.”

The sitar is not a simple folk instrument. It is considered to be a classical music instrument that is capable of great virtuosity, similar to the level of the violin in western classical music.
