The tuba is the largest and lowest pitched instrument in the brass musical instrument family. Like other brass instruments, it is a lip-reed aerophone, which means that the tuba player must contort his or her lips in order to create certain notes. Depressing a series of three finger valves, which, in certain configurations, create other musical notes, creates other notes. The tuba functions as a bass instrument in virtually all of the genres of music that it is used. To this day, it is still prominently used in classical orchestras and marching bands. In addition, tuba was the first bass instrument to be used in early jazz forms, before the upright bass replaced it. Dixieland jazz still utilizes the tuba.
