About Rowing
Rowing is a competitive sport in which opponents race one another in specially designed row boats. These races are typically conducted on placid rivers with few rapids but are also sometimes held on lakes or the ocean, depending on the type of boat and the type of race. Regardless of the type of race, the propelling force of a rowboat is always the use of oars. On rowing teams, sometimes called crews, the boats can contain just one rower or a team of rowers, encouraged by a coxswain who also steers the boat with a rudder. Teamed rowboats use a style of rowing called the sweep oar, in which each rower controls only one oar. In the case of a single rower, however, the rower uses two oars, which is known as sculling. For the single rower, the steerage of the boat in controlled by the stroke of the oars either in tandem or one at a time.
The world of rowing involves a great deal of technique, physical conditioning, and dexterity. Many people pursue rowing because of its excellent cardiovascular benefits, while others wish to race. In either case, working one-on-one with professional rowing tutors can be a tremendous advantage.
