About Scuba Diving
Although scuba diving is not considered to be a competitive sport, it is in fact a physical activity that involves a great deal of physical strength, agility, and dexterity. Scuba Diving involves swimming underwater by means of special diving equipment, such as an underwater breathing apparatus, goggles, flippers, and a wet suit. Scuba diving is most often used as a means of observing underwater wildlife, and surveying shipwrecks and other underwater attractions. Scuba diving is also known to be used in the U.S. military branches as a means of search and rescue, reconnaissance, and covert operations. Because a scuba diver carries his or her own air supply, the range and ability of the diver is greatly expanded from that of a swimmer who is snorkeling, free diving, or using air lines that are connected to land or a boat. Scuba divers must learn how to correctly dive off of a boat, and must also learn how to swim through the water using flippers on their feet.
Recent inventions and advances in technology, however, have led to the development of DPVs (diver propulsion vehicles), which help to propel the diver through the water. Because there are many technical and practical elements to scuba diving, the best way to learn is to work one-on-one with a scuba diving tutor.
