About Water Polo

 

Water polo is a team water sport consisting of six field players and one goalkeeper on each team. The object of the game is simple: players pass a volleyball-style ball and move the ball down the pool and attempt to shoot the ball into a goal protected by the goalkeeper. Because a primary rule of water polo is that the players cannot touch the bottom or sides of the pool, a wide array of swimming techniques are used in order to keep afloat and swim during the game. Some of these techniques include swimming and treading water techniques such as egg beatering, scissor kick, backstroke, front crawl, and other swimming modes.

In addition to these skills, water polo players must also learn ball handling techniques that allow them to swim with only one arm while maneuvering with the ball. In addition, many water polo players are able to tread water while only using their legs. Among the six players on each team, there are no strict offensive and defensive positions, since a water polo player can be called on to play both roles if a game-play situation demands it. Because of these unique elements to the game, those who wish to learn the game of water polo can gain a great deal from working one-on-one with a water polo tutor.
